Picking A Cruise Right for You

After you get the date figured out there's still a world of choices concerning what cruise line. Cruise lines vary from Megaliners to Boutique ships and they are all very different. Megaliners usually hold up to 2,000 or more passengers. Superliners hold between 1,000 to 2,000 passengers. Midsize ships have between 400 to 900, the small ships usually carry fewer than 400 and the boutique ships under 300 passengers.

First questions to ask yourself is how many days you want to cruise, what is your budget and what you want your ship life/land excursions to include.

How many days you want to spend on your cruise will depend on your budget and the time you have available. You can generally choose from three-night cruises to one-month cruises, depending on the cruise line. A good start for first-timers is a five or six-night cruise.

The cruises guide gets lots of letters, and I enjoy reading them and answering questions or directing readers to the answer--whether it be on my site, elsewhere on About, or on the Web.

Probably one of the most frequently asked questions comes from people planning their first cruise. They have been sitting around the dinner table and have had a discussion about where they want to travel or vacation next.

They have heard cruise tales from and seen (or been subjected to) cruise vacation pictures taken by their family and friends, or read in magazines and the Web about how much fun (and economical) cruising can be. They want to "take the plunge" and go on their first cruise, but where to start?
