Cruise-Travel-Vacations: Rome and Civitacecchia - Mediterranean Ports of Call

The weather was beautiful, so we quickly determined that we would tour the ancient city via foot and save the Vatican and St. Peter's for the next day when the weather might be less favorable. We exited the train at the Termini station, found the connection to the subway, and were off to the Colosseum to start our touring.

Walking the streets of Rome in the springtime was wonderful. When we had visited before, it was summer--hot, humid, crowded and miserable. We had feared that Rome the week before Easter in the Jubilee year would be packed with pilgrims and tourists. I guess many others thought the same and stayed at home! The streets were busy but nothing like what we had expected.

We exited the subway at the Colosseum and went directly towards the Forum, marveling at the ancient ruins and trying to picture what they looked like in their glory. One caution about the subway. We found it relatively easy to use but dirtier than the one in Paris or London. One man from our cruise ship reported that his wallet was stolen by a pickpocket in the crowded subway. We never felt threatened while on the subway, train or while walking the streets. But we were cautious and did not carry our valuables or purses with us.

Cruise-Travel-Vacations: Rome and Civitacecchia - Mediterranean Ports of Call

My mother and I had completed a wonderful Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona to Rome on the small ship the Renaissance VII. We spent three glorious post-cruise days in Rome on our own, mostly wandering the streets and using our senses to soak up the culture and flavor of the city.

The weather was superb and enabled us to walk for hours. I wish I had taken my pedometer to measure the distance we walked in our three-day visit! If you have one day in Rome, you'll need to choose between seeing the glory of ancient Rome on one side of the Tiber River or St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museum on the other side.

If you have two days in Rome, you can squeeze in both if you move quickly. With three or more days you can expand the time you spend at each attraction, add another museum, or venture outside the city to the surrounding area.
