Going to the tropics is a little easier. The temperature will not vary much with the seasons. What does vary is the rainfall. The dry season for most tropical locations like the Caribbean and Hawaii is in the summer, and the rainy season is in the winter. This does NOT mean it will rain all of the time. You just need to be prepared for more rain.

Afternoon showers are more common. Of course, if you are coming from Canada or the northern U.S., some warm rainfall is not a problem if you have left piles of snow at home!

Cruise-Travel-Vacations: Rome and Civitacecchia - Mediterranean Ports of Call

When our ship docked in Civitavecchia, we boarded a bus with our fellow passengers for transport to the hotel in Rome. There wasn't much to see in Civitavecchia, so if your ship has only one day in port, you need to try to get into Rome via a shore excursion or by sharing a guide/taxi with your fellow passengers.

We checked into the hotel near the airport before lunch. The Jubilee Year of 2000 had tied up hotels throughout the city, so Renaissance had booked us outside the city. Our hotel was within sight of the airport, which made for an easy transfer when we left Rome for the U.S., but it was a long ride into the city.

The hotel had a free shuttle service running hourly to a drop-off point near the Victor Emmanuel II Monument. We decided before our trip to shuttle into town in the morning, spend the whole day and evening and return on a shuttle after dinner. Our first day, we missed the shuttle, so instead of waiting an hour at the hotel, we opted to take the train that adjoined the airport. It was very inexpensive, and an easy trip into the city.
