Cruise-Travel-Vacations: Rome and Civitacecchia - Mediterranean Ports of Call

When our ship docked in Civitavecchia, we boarded a bus with our fellow passengers for transport to the hotel in Rome. There wasn't much to see in Civitavecchia, so if your ship has only one day in port, you need to try to get into Rome via a shore excursion or by sharing a guide/taxi with your fellow passengers.

We checked into the hotel near the airport before lunch. The Jubilee Year of 2000 had tied up hotels throughout the city, so Renaissance had booked us outside the city. Our hotel was within sight of the airport, which made for an easy transfer when we left Rome for the U.S., but it was a long ride into the city.

The hotel had a free shuttle service running hourly to a drop-off point near the Victor Emmanuel II Monument. We decided before our trip to shuttle into town in the morning, spend the whole day and evening and return on a shuttle after dinner. Our first day, we missed the shuttle, so instead of waiting an hour at the hotel, we opted to take the train that adjoined the airport. It was very inexpensive, and an easy trip into the city.

"The cruise industry's continued strong performance in 2004 reflects the quality, value and consumer demand for cruise vacations and is a testament to the dedicated efforts of CLIA-member travel agencies," said Terry L. Dale, CLIA's president and CEO. "These positive second-quarter statistics reflect both the hard work of CLIA's professional cruise retailers and the growing popularity of seagoing vacations."

Overall, statistics for the first half of 2004 show a 10% increase in worldwide passengers to 5,024,465 from 4,567,855 for the same period in 2003. First-half North American passengers grew 10.6%, to 4,327,772, while foreign- sourced passengers climbed by 6.5% to 696,693 for the same period.

CLIA's first half passenger carryings statistics also include: Itineraries of 1 to 5 days accounted for a 31.2% share of the cruise market; itineraries of 6 to 8 days accounted for 55.8%; 9 to 17-day itineraries accounted for 12.6% and itineraries of 18 days or longer accounted for .4% of the market. * The average length of a cruise in the first half was 6.99 days versus 6.97 days for the same period in 2003. First-half occupancy factors totaled 102% versus 101.1% during the same period in 2003.
